We are a mom and youth co-owned rabbitry. We each have our own breed and work together to care for and show our rabbits.
Many years ago, we raised meat and fiber rabbits as part of a homestead. We held onto a few loved pets when we made a geographical move, but otherwise disbanded the rabbitry. A couple of years ago, the youth half of TRR joined the local 4-H and expressed interest in their new rabbit showmanship project. We whole heartedly agreed and I was delighted to share my previous rabbit knowledge with him. That project provided him with two young Netherland Dwarf rabbits (it is widely the family joke that I told him not to bring home the little cutesy bunny breed, and then ended up falling wildly in love with them when he did)
He surprised us with how quickly he took to it and culminated his first year in the project with two showmanship Grand Champion wins (including an ARBA show). The following year, he again joined the project, this time bringing home a doe. He repeated his wins from the previous year, and this time added a Best of Group win (and Grand Champion leg) to one of his rabbits. He begin to express serious interest in raising and showing, learning the standards and settling on his Netherland Dwarfs to go forward with. He has since bred his first litter, earned more GC legs and worked with a respected breeder to acquire some top quality rabbits for his barn. He has gone on to become Youth Director for the East Coast Angora Specialty Club and won Intermediate Showmanship of the Year with the National Angora Club in 2024. He works hard to care for his rabbits, make decisions and learn more every day.
The mom half has a background successfully showing dogs and horses growing up. My first foray into rabbits was strictly in the homesteading sense, but I fell in love with Satin Angoras as a fiber enthusiast. I'm glad to be back into this gorgeous breed again both for fiber and to show and am currently putting together my own herd. I look forward to showing and raising Toe River Satin Angoras.
The dad? He calls himself the pack mule and spends a lot of time supporting our hobby by driving, picking up feed, building random things for us and schlepping things around rabbit shows (even though he's pretty allergic to rabbits). That's how you know he really loves us!
in 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated our hometown. We were incredibly fortunate not to suffer the loses so many others did and Toe River Rabbits survived, but it has been almost a year where our attention has been focused on rebuilding. We are excited to finally get back out to shows later this year.
